City kids more likely to have food allergies than rural ones

Thursday, June 7, 2012

Children living in urban centers have a much higher prevalence of food allergies than those living in rural areas, according to a new study, which is the first to map children's food allergies by geographical location in the United States. In particular, kids in big cities are more than twice as likely to have peanut and shellfish allergies compared to rural communities.

The study will be published in the July issue of Clinical Pediatrics.

"We have found for the first time that higher population density corresponds with a greater likelihood of food allergies in children," said lead author Ruchi Gupta, M.D., an assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (formerly Children's Memorial). "This shows that environment has an impact on developing food allergies. Similar trends have been seen for related conditions like asthma. The big question is ? what in the environment is triggering them? A better understanding of environmental factors will help us with prevention efforts."

Gupta, also a researcher at the Institute for Healthcare Studies at the Feinberg School, said some of her future research will focus on trying to identify the environmental causes.

The study included 38,465 children, 18 years and under, who comprised a representative sample of U.S. households. Their food allergies were mapped by ZIP code. Here are the key findings of the study:

  • In urban centers, 9.8 percent of children have food allergies, compared to 6.2 percent in rural communities, almost a 3.5 percent difference.
  • Peanut allergies are twice as prevalent in urban centers as in rural communities, with 2.8 percent of children having the allergy in urban centers compared to 1.3 percent in rural communities. Shellfish allergies are more than double the prevalence in urban versus rural areas; 2.4 percent of children have shellfish allergies in urban centers compared to 0.8 percent in rural communities.
  • Food allergies are equally severe regardless of where a child lives, the study found. Nearly 40 percent of food-allergic children in the study had already experienced a severe, life-threatening reaction to food.
  • The states with the highest overall prevalence of food allergies are Nevada, Florida, Georgia, Alaska, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The study controlled for household income, race, ethnicity, gender and age. It tracked food allergy prevalence in urban centers, metropolitan cities, urban outskirts, suburban areas, small towns and rural areas.

Food allergy is a serious and growing health problem. An estimated 5.9 million children under age 18, or one out of every 13 children, now have a potentially life-threatening food allergy, according to 2011 research by Gupta. A severe allergic reaction that can lead to death includes a drop in blood pressure, trouble breathing and swelling of the throat. A food-allergic reaction sends an American to the emergency room every three minutes, according to a March 2011 study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Past research has shown an increased prevalence of asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis in urban areas versus rural ones. One hypothesis is that exposure early in life to certain bacteria associated with rural living may protect against hereditary hypersensitivity to certain allergens. Or, many pollutants encountered in urban areas may trigger the development of these allergies.

The Food Allergy Initiative (FAI), a nonprofit founded in 1998 by concerned parents and grandparents and the largest private funder of food allergy research in the world, provided financial support for this study.

"Dr. Gupta's ongoing research on food allergy prevalence among children in the U.S. is providing critical information to help us address the growing public health issue of food allergies," said Mary Jane Marchisotto, executive director of the Food Allergy Initiative. "We are committed to finding a cure for food allergies and this study provides additional insight about why certain people have food allergies and others do not."

(AP) ? One of the Obama administration's go-to civil rights groups in its efforts to build relationships with American Muslims is suing the New York Police Department over its surveillance programs, some of which were paid for with federal money.

Eight Muslims filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday in New Jersey to force the NYPD to end its surveillance and other intelligence-gathering practices targeting Muslims in the years after the 2001 terrorist attacks. The lawsuit alleged that the NYPD's activities were unconstitutional because they focused on people's religion, national origin and race.

It is the first lawsuit to directly challenge the NYPD's surveillance programs that targeted entire Muslim neighborhoods, chronicling the daily life of where people ate, prayed and got their hair cut. The surveillance was the subject of series of stories by The Associated Press that revealed the NYPD intelligence division infiltrated dozens of mosques and Muslim student groups and investigated hundreds.

The Muslims suing the NYPD are represented by Muslim Advocates, a California-based civil rights group that meets regularly with members of the Obama administration.

One of the lawsuit's plaintiffs stopped attending one New Jersey mosque after learning it was listed in an NYPD file. The mosque, like and dozens of others along the East Coast and listed in NYPD files, was not linked to terrorism either publicly or in the confidential police documents.

Syed Farhaj Hassan, a specialist in the U.S. Army Reserves, said he worried that if his name, or the name of one of his mosques, turned up in a police intelligence dossier, it could jeopardize his military security clearance or job prospects.

"Guilt by association is a career stopper, it's a show stopper, it's an ender," he said. "What happens when that name comes up when you're looking for a job?"

The Obama administration has offered few comments on the NYPD's programs, even as it released plans in the past year for local police departments around the country to counter violent extremism and build relationships in Muslim communities.

Since last fall, the Justice Department has been reviewing requests to investigate the NYPD. And President Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser has said the NYPD does not appear to be breaking any laws. The NYPD has received large federal counterterrorism grants since the 2001 attacks, and a White House anti-drug program has helped pay for some of the NYPD's surveillance equipment.

When asked about the lawsuit Wednesday, NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, "I would just refer them to the New Jersey Attorney General's report that found no wrong doing."

Kelly was referring to findings from a three-month review that New Jersey's attorney general conducted in response to outrage over the NYPD operating secretly in New Jersey neighborhoods where Muslims lived and worked. The state attorney general found that the NYPD did not violate any state laws when it spied on Muslim neighborhoods and organizations, and found there is no recourse for the state of New Jersey to stop the NYPD from infiltrating Muslim student groups, video-taping mosque-goers or collecting their license plate numbers as they prayed.

No court has ruled that the NYPD programs were illegal. But the division operates without significant oversight: The New York City Council does not believe it has the expertise to oversee the intelligence division, and Congress believes the NYPD is not part of its jurisdiction even though the police department receives huge amounts of federal funding each year.

Kelly has said his department is obligated to do this type of surveillance in order to protect New York from another 9/11. He has said the 2001 attacks proved that New Yorkers could not rely solely on the federal government for protection, and the NYPD needed to enhance its efforts.

The lawsuit alleges that these enhancements violate constitutional rights.

"The NYPD program is founded upon a false and constitutionally impermissible premise: that Muslim religious identity is a legitimate criterion for selection of law-enforcement surveillance targets," according to the lawsuit.

Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, said, "There is no reason a police officer should be scribbling notes on little girls attending an elementary school."

The advocacy group, representing the plaintiffs for free, has a good and constructive relationship with the Obama administration, Khera said.

In 2009, Khera was the only representative from an American Muslim advocacy organization who was invited to attend the White House iftar dinner, a Muslim tradition of breaking the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, the group said. The organization was invited to a meeting at the White House in 2010 to discuss views on a Supreme Court vacancy. And the Justice Department invited the group to sit on a panel last year about confronting discrimination since 9/11.

Khera said her organization has asked the Obama administration to look into the NYPD's programs, and she thinks more could be done.

"We do not think that they've been given sufficient attention and attention in a speedy manner," Khera said. "We do think this is an immensely important issue to have the nation's largest police department targeting Americans based on religion. We do think it merits the attention of the federal government."

The White House said it would not comment on pending litigation.

The NYPD and New York officials have said the surveillance programs violated no one's constitutional rights, and the NYPD is allowed to travel anywhere to collect information. Officials have said NYPD lawyers closely review the intelligence division's programs.

Members of Congress and civil rights groups have urged the Justice Department to investigate the NYPD's practices. Federal investigations into police departments typically focus on police abuse or racial profiling in arrests. Since 9/11, the Justice Department has never publicly investigated a police department for its surveillance in national security investigations.

The NYPD has been limited by a court order in what intelligence it can gather on innocent people because of widespread civil rights abuses during the 1950s and 1960s. Lawyers in that case have questioned whether the post-9/11 spying violates that order. The lawsuit filed Wednesday is a separate legal challenge.

A George Washington University law professor, Jonathan Turley, said it would be a challenge to convince the government that the NYPD's practices were illegal because the courts and Congress have allowed more and more surveillance in the years since 9/11. But, he said, most of these questions have been handled in policy debates and not in the court systems.

Moiz Mohammed, a 19-year-old sophomore at Rutgers University, said he joined the lawsuit after reading reports that the NYPD had conducted surveillance of Muslim student groups at colleges across the Northeast, including his own.

"It's such an unfair thing going on: Here I am, I am an American citizen, I was born here, I am law abiding, I volunteer in my community, I have dialogues and good relationships with Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and the NYPD here is surveilling people like me?"

Mohammed said the revelations made him nervous to pray in public or engage in lively debates with fellow students ? a practice he said he once most enjoyed about the college atmosphere.

It is also a practice the Obama administration has said must be protected.

"Law enforcement has an obligation to ensure that members of every religious community enjoy the ability to worship and to practice their faith in peace, free from intimidation, violence or suspicion," Holder said in prepared remarks to a Muslim Advocates dinner in December 2010. "That is the right of all Americans. And it must be a reality for every citizen."

New Jersey Devils Top Los Angeles Kings, 3-1, In Game 4 Of Stanley Cup Final (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES -- Adam Henrique scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:29 to play, Martin Brodeur made 21 saves, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 on Wednesday night to avoid a sweep in the Stanley Cup finals.

Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored third-period goals for the Eastern Conference champion Devils, who forced the NHL to put the Stanley Cup back in its crate for another cross-country trip. Game 5 is Saturday night in Newark, N.J.

"It's a tough situation, but we live another day," Brodeur said. "We wanted to at least have one more game in our building for our fans. Hopefully, we'll make the best of it and come back here."

The Kings have won all 10 of their road playoff games this spring and 12 straight overall ? both NHL postseason records. But after never trailing in the Stanley Cup finals, the Kings never led in Game 4.

After two tense, scoreless periods in front of fans hoping to see the Kings win their first title in their 45-year history, Elias scored on a rebound with 12:04 to play.

Drew Doughty scored a tying power-play goal for the Kings 1:02 later, but Henrique scored on a slick pass from David Clarkson, and Kovalchuk added an empty-netter that sent fans streaming forlornly out into a warm evening in Southern California.

Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots for the Kings, but lost his streak of nearly 139 shutout minutes right when he probably could have wrapped up the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

With a golden chance for a Hockeywood ending, Los Angeles dropped to 15-3 in its spectacular postseason run, failing to win the franchise's first championship on its first try ? and in its 200th playoff game ? in front of the long-suffering fans who have never seen the Stanley Cup.

Los Angeles set an NHL record by taking a 3-0 lead in all four of its playoff series, but failed three times to close out its opponents in Game 4. Vancouver and Phoenix also won Game 4 before losing Game 5.

The Devils became just the sixth of 26 teams in finals history to force a Game 5 after falling behind 0-3. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs ever rallied with four straight wins in the finals, and only three teams in NHL history have done it in any playoff round.

After a tight-checking game between two very tight teams, Elias' rebound goal put a hush over Staples Center. Six seconds after Clarkson went off with a questionable boarding penalty, Mike Richards passed Anze Kopitar's faceoff win to Doughty, who rocketed a long shot past Brodeur for the fourth goal of his breakthrough postseason.

But after so many minutes of tight defense, New Jersey won it with a stunning goal in transition: Former Kings forward Alexei Ponikarovsky got the puck to Clarkson, who found Henrique across the ice for his first goal since ending the Eastern Conference finals with an overtime goal.

The Kings opened their first Stanley Cup finals in 19 years with two tense overtime victories in New Jersey, surviving largely on the brilliance of Quick. Los Angeles then returned home and routed the Devils 4-0 in Game 3 on Monday night, setting the stage for their coronation.

But the Devils got into the details, and the Kings must regroup.

No surprise given the tremendous stakes, both teams were nervous and jumpy from the opening faceoff in Game 4. Quick got plenty of work early when the Devils got two power plays in the opening minutes, but he made a slick glove save on Petr Sykora's shot in the slot and later scrambled to cover Zach Parise's unobstructed rebound chance.

Slava Voynov and Kopitar hit Brodeur's posts for the Kings in the scoreless first period. Both teams appeared to be as tense as the crowd in the second, with Brodeur making a stellar pad save on Simon Gagne's breakaway chance late.

The NHL unpacked the Stanley Cup deep inside Staples Center before the third period, but it never saw the ice.

Gagne and Trevor Lewis got an outstanding breakaway chance early in the third, but Brodeur sprawled on his back to stop Lewis. Brodeur mishandled the puck moments later and nearly gave it right to Brown, but the deflection off Brown's right skate barely missed the net.

Elias finally slipped in on Quick and slapped home a rebound of Bryce Salvador's shot, putting a pall on the crowd and ending Quick's scoreless streak at 138 minutes, 39 seconds.

The gloom didn't last long: Doughty teed up the latest in his long line of booming shots, and Brodeur was at least partly screened by Anton Volchenkov in front.

NOTES: The Kings set a franchise attendance record for the second straight game, packing 18,867 into Staples Center. ... The Devils changed their lineup for Game 4, inserting Sykora into his sixth Stanley Cup finals along with D Henrik Tallinder, who had been out since January with a blood clot. Sykora, a healthy scratch since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, replaced Jacob Josefson, while Tallinder took the spot of former Kings D Peter Harrold. Sykora played more than 12 minutes, and Tallinder logged nearly 20 minutes. ... Gagne played his second straight game after returning to the lineup for Game 3. He had been out since Dec. 26 with a concussion. ... Staples Center was occupied by an LMFAO show on Tuesday night, and Van Halen will play before the teams return for a potential Game 6, although Kings coach Darryl Sutter says the ice is holding up well. ... Will Ferrell, Matthew Perry and Alyssa Milano attended the game.

PixelCrayons Open Source Development: Demand of Every Online ...

If one thing truly revolutionized Internet after the World Wide Web it is Web 2.0. Thanks to the advanced technology, today we are not only able to create dynamic and robust websites but are also able to use open source technology for the purpose. As the name suggests, open source literally keeps the source code ?open? so that it can be viewed by anyone and everyone. Open source allows one developer to design a software, another to modify it and yet another to completely give it a new look. In web development, most of the content management systems are based on open source technology. From WordPress to Joomla, Magento and Drupal all are based on open source technology. Open source CMS gives developers the flexibility of using the core elements of a CMS and molding it according to the demand of the project.

Why Open Source Development Is Demanded by Every Online Business?

  • Cost Effective: The core idea of open source is that it is freely available on the web and you have no need to buy it. There are no restrictions on using an open source content management system and you have the full freedom to use it the way you want to.

  • Easy Modifications: In open source development one can easily make changes in the codes. Sometimes changing codes becomes essential as it helps you make the website robust and dynamic.

  • Large Pool of Developers Working on Open Source CMS: Open source development happens among developers spread across the world. Keen and enthusiastic developers are constantly working on open source CMS to improve the technology, the codes etc. The community is strongly bound with the fervor to improve, to excel and above all to share ideas and criticisms.

  • Numerous Plugins: Since there are thousands of developers working on an open source software, numerous plugins, modules and extensions are constantly developed. To enhance the functionality of your website, you can easily incorporate these plugins.

  • Easy Treatment to Bugs and Threats: Since open source sees constant improvements, chances of detecting a bug or a threat are rare and even if that happens, it can easily be treated. If a developer cannot fix it alone, he will find help on several forums and discussion platforms.

There are thousands of developers who are constantly working to improve the technologies behind open source. To make the most of an open source content management system it is thus advisable to get in touch with such developers who have a firm grip on the technology and know the nuances of it. From developing an ecommerce store to a social networking site, with the help of these developers and open source you can develop almost anything and everything.

Australia Weighs Barrier Reef Health Against Development Plans ...

Australia?s government said it?s
balancing economic needs with conservation at the Great Barrier
Reef after the United Nations warned the site may be endangered
within a year without better protection.

Home to more than 1,500 species of fish, the reef is under
threat from coastal development, ports and natural gas projects,
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization said in a June 1 report. Unesco may consider in
February adding the reef to those World Heritage sites in danger
unless there?s ?substantial progress,? the organization said.

?We want to make sure we get that environmental best
practice,? Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said
yesterday on Sky News in Australia. ?We can do that and still
make sure that we get good economic outcomes.?

The 3,000-kilometer (1,875-mile) marine park flanks the
coast of Queensland state, the world?s biggest source of
steelmaking coal and the exit route to Asia from ports at Abbot
Point and Gladstone. Unesco urged blocking of new port
developments and related infrastructure that would affect the
Great Barrier Reef, saying the scale of development poses
?serious concerns? about the site?s long-term conservation.

Crimping development would risk weakening an industry that
helped Australia avoid recession in the global financial crisis.
In the nation?s biggest commodities boom since the 1850s Gold
Rush, India and China bought coal and iron ore to power their
growing economies.

The federal and Queensland governments are in the early
stages of a strategic assessment of the reef, Environment
Minister Tony Burke said in a statement. He said the government
is ?acutely aware? of challenges facing the site.

?Wake-up Call?

The government should bar any new projects until it has
assessed the impact of the mining boom and the influence of
coastal developments on the reef, the Australian Conservation
Foundation said.

?This report should be a wake-up call for the federal
government,? the foundation?s chief executive officer, Don Henry, said in a statement. ?To have a potential ?in danger?
listing hanging over the reef is a national disgrace.?

Such a label would threaten A$5.1 billion ($4.9 billion) in
tourism revenue, according to Larissa Waters, a senator with the
Australian Greens party.

?Our reef should not be treated like a coal and gas
highway,? Waters said in a statement.

Unesco listed the reef, the world?s largest collection of
corals and the only living thing on earth visible from space, as
a World Heritage Site in 1981. It said in its report that
certain management practices have been ?high quality? and have
set an example to other marine parks.

?Serious Concern?

Still, the Paris-based organization expressed ?serious
concern? over Curtis Island, where Arrow Energy Ltd., owned by
Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) and PetroChina Co., plans a liquefied
natural gas development. There are ?unaddressed concerns? over
the management of the port and LNG facilities at Gladstone
Harbor, from where miners including London-based Rio Tinto Group
ship coal, Unesco said.

In the past decade, about 70 percent of proposed projects
on the Queensland coast that might impact the reef have won
approval, Unesco said.

?The rapid increase of coastal developments, including
ports infrastructure, is of significant concern,? Unesco said.
?Decisive action is required.?

Old Egypt regime candidate attacks Islamist rival

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian presidential candidate, who was the last prime minister in the regime deposed by last year's popular revolution, lashed out at his Islamist rival Sunday, warning he and his fundamentalist group would monopolize power and take Egypt back to "the dark ages."

It was a sign that the runoff race between Ahmed Shafiq, the ex-premier, and the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi was turning into a bitter contest over who could frighten the voters of his rival more. The two face off in a June 16-17 vote.

"I represent the civil state," Shafiq told a news conference. "The Brotherhood represents darkness and secrecy. No one knows who they are or what they are doing. I represent dialogue and tolerance."

"They want to monopolize power," he said. "They don't want to take us 30 years back, but all the way back to the dark ages."

Morsi, for his part, has tried to cash on the unpopularity of a court verdict that sentenced deposed President Hosni Mubarak to life but acquitted him and his two sons of corruption. Six top police commanders accused of complicity in the killing of protesters during last year's uprising were also acquitted.

Tens of thousands demonstrated Saturday in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's uprising that toppled Mubarak's regime, and in other cities to protest against the verdict. Several thousand were in Tahrir Square again on Sunday, and the number was steadily increasing as the afternoon heat wore off.

Morsi has been warning of a Mubarak-style crackdown on opponents if Shafiq is elected. Supporters of the Brotherhood, which had until Mubarak's ouster last year been outlawed for nearly six decades, were harassed and imprisoned during the former president's 29-year rule.

Morsi went to Tahrir Square on Saturday night to show solidarity with the protesters and scheduled a meeting later Sunday with families of some who were killed. He also vowed to retry Mubarak, his sons and aides, promising not to rest until the dead protesters are avenged.

Shafiq questioned whether Morsi would be the actual president, or rather a front for the Brotherhood's real spiritual and political leaders.

"Would the president of Egypt be the one who was elected, or there would be another one behind the scene?" Shafiq asked. Countering charges that he was an extension of the deposed Mubarak regime, he said the Brotherhood made several deals with the old regime and its security agencies.

"How come you flirt with the (minority Christian) Copts in news conferences and later harass them in their homes and businesses?" he asked.

Shafiq spoke a day after his mentor, Mubarak, and ex-security chief Habib el-Adly were sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising last year. Mubarak, his two sons and a family friend were acquitted of corruption charges, and six top police commanders were also cleared of complicity in the killing of the protesters.

According to security officials, Mubarak on Sunday wore the blue prison suit for convicts in his new jail, the Torah prison south of Cairo, and had his mug shot taken according to prison regulations.

He had spent the 13 months since his arrest in hospitals, first in his favorite Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and later at a spacious suite in a military hospital on the eastern outskirts of Cairo.

The prison also rejected his request that the two doctors who handled his case in the military hospital be reassigned to Torah, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Mubarak resisted leaving the helicopter that flew him to Torah from court on Saturday, pleading with his escort to take him back to the military hospital, according to the officials.

Mubarak, they said, also suffered a "health crisis" aboard the aircraft. He stayed aboard the helicopter for more than two hours after it landed at Torah.

The demonstrations following the verdicts also touched on the Shafiq-Morsi runoff. Some protesters tore billboards bearing the image of Shafiq, who, like Mubarak, was a career air force officer. Others also chanted slogans against Morsi.

Egypt's top prosecutor is appealing the verdicts in search of tougher ones, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

The prosecution had demanded the death penalty for Mubarak and el-Adly.

Kings Beat Devils, 2-1, In Game 2: Jeff Carter Goal Gives Los Angeles 2-0 Lead In Stanley Cup Final (VIDEO)

Once again, three periods were not enough to separate the New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings.

Just like in Game 1, the Kings found the winner in overtime. Los Angeles holds a 2-0 series lead in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final thanks to a goal by Jeff Carter, capping a frenetic fourth period. This is the Kings' 10th straight road win in the postseason.

Entering the game with a 1-0 series lead after Anze Kopitar scored the OT winner in Game 1, the Kings went out in front in Game 2 in the first period when Drew Doughty finished a captivating slalom run, nearly skating the length of the ice, with a shot past Martin Brodeur.

Although the Devils were outshooting the Kings entering the third, they trailed, 1-0, after 40 minutes. Less than three minutes into the final scheduled period, New Jersey finally broke through. A long-range effort from Marek Zidlicky was deflected into the back of the net by Ryan Carter.

With the score level entering the final minutes of regulation, both sides pushed for the decisive tally, even as men were being pulled from the ice by the officials. After a thrilling stretch of 4-on-4 play, the game went to overtime.
