Now On Kickstarter: A Thin, Solar-Powered, Bluetooth 4.0 Game Controller Built Directly Into An iPhone Case

bluetooth-controllerGame controllers for iPhone are no longer all that rare, even though once upon a time Apple didn't even allow them to connect to its smartphone. Still, there's plenty of room for innovation in this space, and Justice Frangipane's new design is a perfect example of how things can still get better in this market. The project is an iPhone case that while only 3mm thick, holds a Bluetooth 4.0 video game controller that recharges via solar power.

Twitter offers users scrapbook of past tweets

(AP) ? Twitter is offering its more than 200 million users a chance to keep a digital scrapbook of all their tweets.

The tool, announced this week, is designed to make it easier for people to review all their activity on Twitter's trend-setting messaging service.

When it's available, the downloading option will appear at the bottom of each user's settings menu.

Twitter, which is based in San Francisco, said it may take a few weeks before everyone gets the feature.

After a records request is made, users will receive an email on how to download their personal archive. For Twitter's earliest users, the records date back to 2006 when Twitter started.

Twitter users already have been able to peruse their past tweets by navigating to their personal profile page. But going that route is more cumbersome because it requires scrolling down a page that can sometimes be slow to display additional tweets.

The company said that users who download their entire histories should find it easier to search for particular tweets and organize the messages ? by month, for example.

The new tool also should serve as a reminder that a copy of everything people have tweeted still resides on Twitter's computers.

Other widely used services, such as Facebook's popular social network, also have been creating digital portraits of people's lives as more content gets posted on their sites. Facebook gives its more than 1 billon users the option to download everything they have shared on the service. It has become easier this year for Facebook users to look at their past musings and photos as the service converted people's profiles into a timeline that sorts content by the month it was shared.

Recipe: Cherry Quinoa Salad with Lamb | FOOD & DRINK | Refinery ...

Posted on December 19, 2012 by Bree Moore

You know Christmas isn?t far away when you start seeing cherries in the supermarket; the sight and smell of them can take you back to the dinner table for a big Christmas feast. Cherries are in season from early November to February, with supply peaking in December and January and this year?s growing conditions have ensured there will be plenty of luscious local cherries to enjoy throughout this short but sweet cherry season.

This sweet fruit is a great source of vitamin C and high in potassium; they are low in kilojoules; and contain dietry fibre and antioxidants. President of Cherry Growers Australia Andrew Smith says, ?Consumers should look for plump glossy cherries with relatively smooth, unblemished skin. Bright green stems in good condition are also indicative of healthy fruit.? Store fresh cherries in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days either in a colander on the lowest shelf in the fridge or in the crisper inside a vegetable storage bag. To celebrate the arrival of cherry season and impending Christmas days, we share a lovely cherry salad with you - Cherry Quinoa Salad with Lamb.

Ingredients

1 cup tri-colour or white quinoa, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup (80ml) olive oil
6 lamb tenderloin fillets
1/4 cup (60ml) lemon juice
1? cups pitted fresh cherries, halved
3 spring onions, thinly sliced
? cup finely chopped parsley
? cup finely chopped mint
1/2 cup toasted pistachios, coarsely chopped
200g Greek feta
3 cups water

Method

  1. Combine water and quinoa in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes or until grains are tender. Drain, then transfer to a large bowl and set aside to cool.
  2. Lightly coat the lamb fillets in 2 tablespoons oil; season well with salt and freshly ground pepper.
  3. Heat chargrill pan over high heat then cook lamb for 6 minutes turning or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, whisk remaining oil and lemon juice until combined, then add to the quinoa and toss to coat.
  5. Add remaining ingredients to bowl and toss well to combine.

To Serve

Easier Than Ever Tips For Getting Some Immediate Debt Relief

Debt is something that no one enjoys. Actually, the words ?enjoy? and ?debt? simply aren?t ?found in the same sentence unless it?s referencing the benefits of debt relief. Whether debt was sprung upon you randomly, or it built up over time it?s certain that you?re wanting to get rid of it as soon as possible. Believe it or not but you can actually be relieved from debt rather immediately. So what are you waiting for? All you need to seek immediate debt relief is the willpower to want to get rid of it fast. Here are the top five ways that can help you can turn that negative frown within your financial situation upside down!

Make a ?List

Aren?t lists helpful? Create a list of all the debts that you have and/or are wanting to seek debt relief from. Create a list that is as detailed as possible. That means getting yourself a copy of your credit report, and find out what kind of debt is logged under your name. Gather it together, so you know exactly the amount that it is that you need to take care of in order to seek debt relief. This will also help you stay organized when it comes to paying off those debts as the amounts and to whom payment goes to is all right there, beautifully organized!

Who do you turn to for debt relief advice?

Seeking Advice

You can truly never receive too much advice when it comes to seeking relief from your debt and speaking with a professional can certainly be beneficial to you and your action towards being debt free immediately. There are a variety of debt?counselors?that are readily available to you, both nonprofit and for profit so do a quick search and set up a meeting with someone that can help you on your path to a negative-free-number bank account!

Second Mortgage?

This may not be your most ideal situation, but grabbing a second mortgage can immediately relieve you from your credit card debts, and other kinds that you want to get rid of. The only downside of this is that you would now have a low fee to pay for the second mortgage, but if it is less than what you were paying for your debt, and you can see the value in proceeding, than this is certainly a fabulous option.

Retirement Funds

Again, this may not be something you?re eager to do, but if you?re serious about seeking immediate relief from your debt, as mentioned, it can be done. Cashing in half of your retirement funds can actually be a marvelous and a very smart solution. However it?s imperative that you compare your interest rates that you receive on your retirement funds to your interest rates that you are charged from having your debt and see if this is an option that you want to continue with.

Yearlong Space Missions Will Present Physical and Mental Challenges

NASA is getting ready to send astronauts on yearlong missions to the International Space Station, doubling the duration of a typical orbital stay. These long-term missions will be sending spaceflyers into largely uncharted territory, and some of the biggest unknowns are how the human mind and body will react to that much time in space.

NASA has long known that weightlessness wreaks havoc on the body, with astronauts losing muscle mass and bone density, and even suffering eyesight degeneration, after spending time in space.

"While it's definitely new territory for NASA, I wouldn't expect the challenges of a yearlong mission to be substantially different from those of a six-month mission," said former space station commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, who is now president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. "A yearlong mission will be beneficial to Human Research Program scientists as they continue to expand the envelope of human spaceflight so that one day we can undertake the longer missions that we think will be necessary to voyage beyond cis-lunar space," or the region between Earth and the moon.

Another health risk associated with spaceflight is radiation: Beyond the protective confines of Earth's atmosphere, astronauts are exposed to potentially dangerous radiation from the sun, and the longer they spend in space, the more radiation they receive. [Most Extreme Human Spaceflight Records]?

And the health risks are just one side of the challenge. Psychologically, the isolation and confinement of life on the space station can be tough to deal with as well.

Though exercise machines installed on the space station can mitigate the body issues, and phone calls and emails home can help the mind, both of these problems should be more severe for crews spending twice the normal mission length in orbit.

"For the crew, the biggest challenge would be psycho-social," another former space station commander, Leroy Chiao, wrote in an email. "It is difficult to be away for a long period of time. Fortunately, the ISS features excellent communication tools for crews to keep in touch with friends and loved ones."

Though some cosmonauts spent a year or longer on previous space missions to the Russian Mir station, no one has ever lived for a year at the International Space Station. The first ISS yearlong crew will be NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko, who are due to launch in 2015.

Kelly, a former U.S. Navy test pilot with combat experience, said he thinks he's up to the challenge.

"We have a really good group of people here, the behavioral health and performance group, that works with us to try to mitigate the psychological impact of being away from home and isolated for a long time," Kelly told SPACE.com during an interview earlier this month. "I kind of recognize what I need in that regard and what I can do to make it better."

And as for the risk to his bodily health, Kelly said he's prepared to take it on.

"I'm not a big worrier, but I certainly understand that there is more risk," he said. "But in anything I've done throughout my career ? flying aircraft as a test pilot ? there's risk and reward, and you have to weigh the risks, and I think it's worth it."

Inside the head of a dinosaur

Dec. 19, 2012 ? An international team of scientists, including PhD student Stephan Lautenschlager and Dr Emily Rayfield of the University of Bristol, found that the senses of smell, hearing and balance were well developed in therizinosaurs and might have affected or benefited from an enlarged forebrain. These findings came as a surprise to the researchers as exceptional sensory abilities would be expected from predatory and not necessarily from plant-eating animals.

Therizinosaurs are an unusual group of theropod dinosaurs which lived between 145 and 66 million years ago. Members of this group had evolved into up to 7m (23ft) large animals, with more than 50cm (20in) long, razor-sharp claws on their forelimbs, elongated necks and a coat of primitive, down-like feathers along their bodies. Although closely related to carnivorous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor, and in spite of their bizarre appearance, therizinosaurs were probably peaceful herbivores.

Inspired by this paradox, the international team of palaeontologists decided to take the first close look inside the heads of these enigmatic dinosaurs.

They studied the brain and inner ear anatomy of therizinosaurs using high-resolution CT scanning and 3D computer visualisation to find out more about their sensory and cognitive capabilities and how these had evolved with the transition from meat- to plant-eating.

The focus of the study was the skull of Erlikosaurus andrewsi -- a 3-4m (10-13ft) therizinosaur, which lived more than 90 million years ago in what is now Mongolia.

Lead author, Stephan Lautenschlager of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences said: "Our results suggest that therizinosaurs would have used their well-developed sensory repertoire to their advantage which, for herbivorous animals, must have played an important role in foraging, in the evasion of predators or in social complexity.

"This study sheds a new light on the evolution of dinosaur senses and shows it is more complex than we thought."

Co-author, Professor Lindsay Zanno of the North Carolina Museum of Natural History and the North Carolina State University agrees: "Once you've evolved a good sensory toolkit, it's probably worth hanging on to, whether you're hunting or being hunted."

Fellow author Lawrence Witmer, Chang Professor of Paleontology at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine said: "Of course the actual brain tissue is long gone from the fossil skulls but we can use CT scanning to visualize the cavity that the brain once occupied and then generate 3D computer renderings of the olfactory bulbs and other brain parts."

This study has important ramifications for our understanding of how sensory function evolved in different dinosaur groups and whether it was developed as a response to their environment or simply inherited by their ancestors. In particular, in the light of the transition from dinosaurs to birds, these results should prove to be very interesting.
